CloudPay Secures $120 Million Funding Round to Propel Global Payroll Solutions
In a notable move for the payroll services sector, CloudPay has announced a substantial $120 million funding round led by Blue Owl Capital. This investment marks a significant milestone for the company, raising its total funding to $228 million and valuing it notably higher than its previous round in October 2022.
The Evolution of CloudPay
Founded in 1996 as a joint venture between Patersons HR and Payroll Solutions, CloudPay has evolved from a niche player into a leading provider of payroll and payment services for enterprise clients. Over the decades, the company has quietly expanded its offerings, incorporating workflow automation to stay competitive with emerging rivals.
CFO Andy Thomson highlighted the company’s growth trajectory in an interview with TechCrunch. “CloudPay is handling the payroll processes of 280 firms including Visa, Wayfair, Wells Fargo, Expedia, and The London Stock Exchange,” Thomson stated. “We process more than 3 million pay slips annually across over 130 countries.”
Revenue Growth and Strategic Focus
CloudPay’s financial performance reflects its successful expansion. “CloudPay is sitting at contracted revenue of $125 million,” Thomson revealed. “Over the last three years, we have more than doubled revenue.”
This latest funding round will enable CloudPay to continue its growth trajectory. “In an environment of constant change, customer expectations are shifting, too,” Thomson explained. “They expect more. In the world’s on-demand culture, traditional payroll doesn’t always fit, so we’ve evolved payroll to fit new demands. Compliance and legislation have gotten more complex and varied country to country as well.”
Innovative Solutions and Competitive Landscape
CloudPay offers a diverse range of services, including global payroll, salary payments, and pay-on-demand solutions. Its platform features real-time reporting and customizable dashboards for payroll professionals, and offers various funding and payment options tailored to employees’ needs.
The competitive landscape for payroll software remains intense, with startups like Workpay, Symmetrical.ai, Payroll Integrations, and recently acquired Skuad vying for market share. As highlighted by my colleague Mary Ann, the proliferation of startups aiming to enhance payroll solutions underscores the industry’s rapid evolution.
Investment in Technology and Future Plans
With a workforce of 1,350 and offices spanning Raleigh, Budapest, Shanghai, Costa Rica, and Barcelona, CloudPay is poised to leverage its new funding to integrate additional partners and advance its automation and AI technologies. “CloudPay’s innovation in technology has been a significant focus for us this year, and with this round of funding, we can accelerate our timeline,” Thomson noted. “We expect to make AI announcements later this year.”
Rho Capital Partners, The Olayan Group, and Hollyport Capital also participated in this funding round, underscoring strong investor confidence in CloudPay’s future prospects.
