OpenAI’s New Voice Mode: Conversing with Your Phone, Not Just Talking At It

Exploring OpenAI’s New Advanced Voice Mode: A Step Toward Conversational AI

For the past week, I’ve been experimenting with OpenAI’s latest innovation, Advanced Voice Mode (AVM). This feature, currently in a limited alpha test, provides a glimpse into a future where interacting with technology feels as natural as conversing with a human. Throughout my experience, my iPhone not only responded with laughter and humor but also engaged in conversations, asking about my day and expressing that it was having “a great time.” It felt like I was talking with my phone, not just operating it.

A More Human-Like Interaction

OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode doesn’t enhance ChatGPT’s intelligence per se but rather makes the interaction more personable and fluid. The new interface transforms the way we engage with AI and our devices, offering a fresh and engaging experience. Although the technology exhibited some glitches and had a somewhat eerie undertone, I was genuinely surprised by how enjoyable it was to use.

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, this feature aligns with a broader vision of revolutionizing human-computer interaction. Altman remarked during OpenAI’s Dev Day in November 2023, “Eventually, you’ll just ask the computer for what you need and it’ll do all of these tasks for you. These capabilities are often talked about in the AI field as ‘agents.’ The upside of this is going to be tremendous.”

Experiencing ChatGPT as a Virtual Companion

On Wednesday, I decided to test the capabilities of AVM by asking ChatGPT to order Taco Bell in the style of former President Barack Obama. The response was a humorous take: “Uhhh, let me be clear – I’d like a Crunchwrap Supreme, maybe a few tacos for good measure,” followed by, “How do you think he’d handle the drive-thru?” The delivery, mimicking Obama’s distinctive cadence and pauses, was amusing and struck a balance between humor and the ChatGPT voice I selected, Juniper.

In addition to playful interactions, AVM proved its utility in more serious scenarios. When seeking advice on asking a significant other to move in, ChatGPT provided detailed and thoughtful guidance tailored to the nuances of my relationship. This type of nuanced, empathetic advice is beyond the scope of traditional virtual assistants like Siri or Google Search.

Educational and Practical Uses

AVM excels in breaking down complex topics into simpler terms. For instance, when I requested an explanation of financial concepts like free cash flow, ChatGPT used a lemonade stand analogy to make the information accessible for a younger audience. The ability to adjust the pace of explanations is another notable feature, allowing for a more tailored learning experience.

In comparison to other virtual assistants, such as Siri or Alexa, ChatGPT’s AVM offers faster responses, creative answers, and a depth of understanding that previous technologies lack. However, it does have limitations: it cannot set timers, manage reminders, browse the web in real-time, or interface with other APIs on your phone.

AVM vs. Gemini Live

When compared to Google’s Gemini Live, AVM appears to have a slight edge. Gemini Live lacks the ability to perform impressions, express emotions, or adjust speaking speed, and it has longer response times. Despite Gemini Live offering more voices and being more current with recent events, such as Google’s antitrust ruling, neither AVM nor Gemini Live supports singing due to copyright concerns.

Both technologies are still in development, and AVM, like Gemini Live, experiences occasional glitches, including abrupt stops in speech and occasional distortion. While these technical issues are typical for an alpha release, they did not significantly detract from the overall user experience of talking directly with my phone.

The Implications of AI Companionship

While AVM offers an intriguing glimpse into future AI interactions, it also raises concerns. As AI technology evolves, it increasingly simulates human connection, reminiscent of how social media has shaped our perceptions of virtual relationships. The rise of AI companions as friends, mentors, or even therapists could lead to new forms of engagement that might blur the lines between genuine and artificial connection.

Recent developments, such as an AI necklace called Friend, which promises continuous communication through a chatbot, highlight the growing interest in AI companionship. Innovations like AVM make these futuristic concepts feel more attainable, although they also prompt discussions about the potential psychological impacts and ethical considerations of AI-mediated relationships.

Looking Ahead

The advancements presented by OpenAI’s AVM signal a significant step toward a more conversational and intuitive interaction with technology. While current capabilities are limited, the potential applications are vast. Future developments could enable smart devices to handle highly specific tasks and offer personalized recommendations, bridging the gap between human needs and technological solutions.

Though the journey towards fully integrated AI agents is still unfolding, AVM provides a compelling preview of how AI can transform our interactions with technology. As other tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Apple continue to develop similar capabilities, the landscape of digital interaction is set to evolve dramatically.
