AI Now Writes Up to 30% of Microsoft’s Code, Says CEO Satya Nadella

Artificial Intelligence Takes the Wheel in Software Development
During a recent appearance at Meta’s LlamaCon developer conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in the company’s software development efforts.
Speaking with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a fireside chat, Nadella stated that AI now writes 20% to 30% of the code within Microsoft’s internal repositories. “That code was written by software,” Nadella explained, referring to the role of AI-based tools like GitHub Copilot and other internal systems that assist engineers in writing code.

AI’s Uneven Progress Across Programming Languages
Nadella also pointed out that the effectiveness of AI in coding varies depending on the programming language. The company has seen stronger results in Python, while more traditional and lower-level languages like C++ have shown slower progress in terms of AI assistance.
This aligns with broader industry observations, as languages like Python—favored for its simplicity and use in machine learning—lend themselves more easily to AI generation than systems languages like C++.
Industry-Wide Trend Toward AI Code Generation
Microsoft isn’t alone in this shift. Just last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared during Alphabet’s earnings call that more than 30% of Google’s code is now generated using AI tools. However, he didn’t detail how that percentage was calculated.
“AI is generating more than 30% of [our] code.”
— Sundar Pichai, Google CEO
The increasing adoption of generative AI tools among tech giants signals a transformative period in how software is developed—but also raises questions about standards and measurement.
Looking Ahead: AI as the Default Developer?
Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott has set an ambitious projection: by 2030, 95% of all code could be AI-generated. This forecast underscores a potential future where human programmers become more like supervisors—guiding, validating, and refining AI-generated code rather than writing it from scratch.
“95% of all code [will be] AI-generated by 2030.”
— Kevin Scott, Microsoft CTO
When Nadella turned the conversation around and asked Zuckerberg how much of Meta’s own code is AI-generated, the Meta CEO admitted he wasn’t sure.
Interpreting the Numbers
While these figures are headline-grabbing, there’s still little industry consensus on what qualifies as “AI-generated” code. Is it a suggestion auto-completed by an assistant like Copilot? Or full code modules written end-to-end by AI? With companies measuring this differently, comparisons should be taken with caution.
