NewLimit Secures $130M to Advance Anti-Aging Therapies Led by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong

NewLimit Raises $130 Million to Advance Anti-Aging Cell Reprogramming

Biotech startup NewLimit has secured a major $130 million Series B funding round, continuing its mission to extend human healthspan by reprogramming aging cells at the genetic level.

High-Profile Investors Back Longevity Science

The Series B round was led by prominent venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, and included contributions from new investors such as Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, and Khosla Ventures. Returning supporters like Founders Fund, Dimension Capital, Elad Gil, Garry Tan, and Patrick Collison also recommitted their confidence in the company.

This latest funding effort comes two years after NewLimit’s $40 million Series A. Founded over four years ago by Brian Armstrong (CEO of Coinbase), Blake Byers (former GV partner), and stem cell expert Jacob Kimmel, the company is focused on reversing age-related cellular decline.

Rejuvenating Cells Through Epigenetic Reprogramming

NewLimit has reported significant developments in their work with aged cells, aiming to restore their youthful functions. According to Jacob Kimmel, who also serves as the company’s chief scientist, NewLimit has identified three experimental medicines capable of reprogramming liver cells.

“These lab tests show that rejuvenation can restore the cells’ ability to process fat and alcohol,” Kimmel told TechCrunch. He explained that their process compares cellular response between older and younger liver cells. Once treated, the aged cells begin to resemble their younger counterparts in behavior.

AI-Driven Drug Discovery in the Lab

Although these early results are promising, NewLimit is still several years away from launching clinical trials in humans. In the meantime, the company is leaning on artificial intelligence to accelerate drug discovery.

“What the AI model allows us to do is run all those experiments in simulation and then only follow up on the most promising subset,” Kimmel said. This AI-guided experimentation process, often referred to as a “lab in a loop”, continually refines itself by learning from real-world lab outcomes.

The Competitive Landscape in Longevity Biotech

NewLimit is part of a growing movement in biotech focused on anti-aging solutions. Retro Biosciences, for example, raised $180 million from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and is reportedly working on a $1 billion Series A. Meanwhile, Altos Labs, another major player in the field, launched in 2022 with a staggering $3 billion in funding and backing from Jeff Bezos.

These figures underscore a growing belief among tech leaders and investors that science can meaningfully extend not just lifespan, but healthspan — the years of life lived in good health.
