Nintendo Raises Prices on Original Switch Models Citing Market Pressures
Nintendo has confirmed it will be increasing prices on several of its gaming consoles and accessories starting August 3, citing current “market conditions” as the driving factor.
Price Hikes Impacting Multiple Switch Models
In a statement released Friday, Nintendo announced that the original Nintendo Switch lineup—including the OLED Model, Nintendo Switch, and Switch Lite—will be subject to price increases. In addition, various Nintendo Switch accessories will also see higher prices. Other Nintendo-branded products such as certain Switch 2 accessories, selected amiibo, and the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo are included in the revised pricing strategy.
Although the company has not disclosed the exact updated pricing, the current standard retail prices stand at $299.99 for the base Switch and $349.99 for the OLED version.
Possible Link to U.S. Tariff Policy
Nintendo’s brief mention of “market conditions” is believed to be a reference to the recent changes in U.S. tariff policy under former President Donald Trump. The administration’s revised tariff rules, which now extend to Vietnam, are likely to impact Nintendo’s supply chain. While the company had previously shifted much of its manufacturing from China to Vietnam to sidestep trade penalties, the expanded tariffs appear to have closed that loophole.
Nintendo Switch 2 Remains Stable—for Now
The pricing of the newer Nintendo Switch 2, released on June 5, remains unchanged at $450. In the official statement, Nintendo clarified:
“Pricing for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, physical and digital Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games, as well as Nintendo Switch Online memberships, will remain unchanged at this time. However, please note that price adjustments may be necessary in the future.”
This indicates that while the current generation of consoles is unaffected by the immediate price revisions, future changes may still be on the horizon.
Strong Early Sales for Switch 2
The announcement came alongside Nintendo’s fiscal first-quarter earnings report, in which the company revealed impressive sales figures for the Switch 2. Since launching on June 5, the console has sold 5.82 million units, underscoring its early popularity despite looming market uncertainty.
Strategic Adjustments Amid Global Trade Shifts
Nintendo’s pricing decision highlights the broader effects of international trade policy on global tech companies. As the ripple effects of tariff realignments unfold, even dominant players like Nintendo must adapt their pricing and production strategies.
