WhatsApp Unveils Instagram Notes-Style “About” Status to Boost User Interaction
Meta is refreshing one of WhatsApp’s earliest features by rolling out a redesigned status tool that closely mirrors Instagram Notes. The update introduces a more visible and interactive way for users to share short text updates with their contacts.
A Familiar Style of Status Update
Much like Instagram Notes, the new WhatsApp feature enables users to publish brief text snippets that others can read. These updates can be used to signal what you’re doing, share something new in your day, or simply spark casual conversations.
According to the company, the feature is designed to help people express quick updates, including reasons they “might not be available to talk at present.” Meta notes that this capability isn’t entirely fresh—WhatsApp points out that the “About” status was originally “WhatsApp’s first feature” before the platform shifted its focus to secure messaging.
A More Prominent Placement Across Chats
Unlike the previous version of the “About” section, the revamped design places these updates in high-visibility areas. Users will now see their contacts’ “About” status at the top of one-on-one chat threads and on profile pages. In addition, WhatsApp confirms that people can tap directly on an “About” update to send a reply, making the feature more conversational.
Short-Lived Updates With Optional Controls
By default, the revamped status will automatically disappear after 24 hours—mirroring Instagram Notes’ ephemeral nature. However, WhatsApp confirms that users can customize how long the update remains visible, with options to shorten the duration or extend it beyond one day. The audience can also be adjusted, allowing people to choose whether their status is shown to all contacts or limited groups.
Not Yet as Feature-Rich as Instagram Notes
At launch, WhatsApp’s “About” status offers fewer capabilities than Instagram Notes, which supports looping short videos and integrates with music services to show what users are listening to. WhatsApp hints that more enhancements could arrive in the future “if the new feature sees wide adoption.”
The rollout begins this week for users on mobile devices.
