OpenAI-Supported Biotech Chai Discovery Secures $130M in Series B Funding at $1.3B Valuation

Major Funding Boost for AI-Driven Biotech

Chai Discovery, a biotechnology startup supported by OpenAI, has secured $130 million in Series B funding, reaching a $1.3 billion valuation, the company announced on Monday. The latest round highlights growing investor confidence in artificial intelligence–powered drug discovery as the sector continues to attract significant capital.

The Series B was led by General Catalyst and Oak HC/FT, with participation from existing backers Menlo Ventures, OpenAI, Dimension, Thrive Capital, Neo, Yosemite venture fund, Lachy Groom, and SV Angel. New investors Glade Brook and Emerson Collective also joined the round. Following this raise, Chai Discovery’s total funding exceeds $225 million.

AI as a Faster Path to Drug Development

Chai Discovery operates within a rapidly expanding biotech segment that uses artificial intelligence to accelerate and improve drug development processes. In August, Menlo Ventures led the company’s $70 million Series A round, describing Chai as a startup developing foundation models tailored for drug discovery.

According to Menlo Ventures, Chai’s technology focuses on predicting interactions between biochemical molecules, enabling them to be reprogrammed for potential therapeutic use—a process that could significantly shorten traditional drug development timelines.

Building a “Design Suite” for Molecules

Chai has outlined an ambitious vision for its technology, stating that its goal is to “build the ‘computer-aided design suite’ for molecules.” The startup introduced its first model, Chai 1, last year and has since rolled out Chai 2, its latest AI system.

The company says Chai 2 delivers significant improvements in success rates compared to other methods for de novo antibody design, which involves creating antibodies from scratch rather than modifying existing ones.

“Our latest models can design molecules that have properties we’d want from actual drugs, and tackle challenging targets that have been out of reach,” Josh Meier, Chai’s co-founder and CEO, said in a prepared statement.

Leadership and Company Background

Josh Meier brings a strong machine learning background to the role. According to his LinkedIn profile, he previously worked in research and engineering at Facebook and, before that, at OpenAI. Chai Discovery was founded in 2024, positioning it as a relatively young company that has rapidly scaled both its technology and investor backing.

Industry Implications

With its latest funding round and expanding AI capabilities, Chai Discovery is positioning itself at the forefront of AI-enabled drug design. As pharmaceutical companies and investors increasingly look to computational approaches to reduce costs and timelines, Chai’s progress underscores the growing convergence of artificial intelligence and life sciences.
