Harmattan AI Reaches Unicorn Status in Record Time
French defense technology startup Harmattan AI is scaling rapidly—mirroring the speed of the advanced aircraft now associated with its newest strategic partner. Established in 2024, the company has reached a $1.4 billion valuation following the close of a $200 million Series B funding round, led by Dassault Aviation, the French aerospace giant behind the Rafale fighter jet.
The fresh capital cements Harmattan AI’s position as one of Europe’s fastest-rising defense tech firms and marks its transition from ambitious newcomer to full-fledged industry heavyweight.
From “European Anduril” to Strategic Partner
Harmattan AI develops autonomy and mission-system software for military aircraft, and despite being less than two years old, it has already drawn strong backing from both the French and British ministries of defense. Earlier in its journey, the company described itself as a “European Anduril,” signalling its ambition to challenge established defense primes.
That stance has since evolved. Rather than seeking to replace incumbents, Harmattan AI is now positioning itself as a collaborative force within the defense ecosystem—even if that means dropping its earlier label as a “next-generation defense prime.”
Shaping the Future of Air Combat with Dassault
According to Harmattan AI’s latest press release, the company—now formally referring to itself as a “defense technology company”—will work closely with Dassault Aviation to influence the next era of aerial warfare.
The partnership will focus on developing embedded AI capabilities for future generations of Rafale fighter jets and military drones, while ensuring these systems remain sovereign and scalable—two priorities that are increasingly critical for European defense strategies.
Drones, Ukraine, and NATO’s Wake-Up Call
The widespread use of drones in the Ukraine conflict has forced NATO forces to rethink modern warfare, creating strong momentum for defense-focused startups. Harmattan AI says this environment has accelerated demand for its solutions.
The company noted that the new funding will allow it to expand into additional defense domains and scale production of platforms used for drone interception, electronic warfare, and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance). It also highlighted a recent partnership with Skyeton, a drone manufacturer.
Political Backing at the Highest Level
The announcement received public praise from French President Emmanuel Macron, who described the development as:
“Excellent news for our strategic autonomy, for the technological superiority of our armed forces in the field of AI-activated defense drones, as well as for our economy.”
The endorsement underscores the strategic importance of Harmattan AI not only as a commercial success, but as a pillar of France’s long-term defense autonomy.
A Global Outlook Beyond Europe
While the funding round is significant for France, Harmattan AI has made clear that its ambitions extend well beyond national borders. Its stated mission of “empowering the armed forces of liberal democracies and their allies” leaves the door open for international expansion.
The company is already taking concrete steps in that direction. It plans to exhibit at the World Defense Show in Riyadh next month and is actively expanding its team in the United States.
Rapid Contracts and Scaling Manufacturing
Harmattan AI set a major milestone in July, announcing it had secured a “multi-million-U.S. dollar contract by a NATO government” for the delivery of AI-enabled small drones, just one year after launching operations.
CEO and co-founder Mouad M’Ghari said the company is now “entering a new phase of scale” as it prepares to “ramp-up manufacturing.”
In the same LinkedIn post, M’Ghari revealed that the Series B comes on top of $42 million previously raised, including a seed round led by Atlantic and a Series A led by FirstMark, with participation from Motier Ventures and Sisyphus Ventures.
A Mission Framed by Global Instability
Harmattan AI’s leadership has also been vocal about the broader geopolitical context shaping its work. CTO and co-founder Martin de Gourcuff struck a philosophical tone in a LinkedIn post, writing:
“As the international order goes off the rails, we are entering an era where, increasingly, power precedes law. A reversal of the civilized world we strive for. Harmattan AI exists to protect our values and flip that relationship back, as power without law is just mere violence.”
