Reddit Sees AI Search as Its Next Major Growth Opportunity
Reddit is positioning its AI-powered search as a key driver for future growth, signaling that the technology could impact both user experience and revenue. The company shared these insights during its fourth-quarter earnings call on Thursday, highlighting plans to merge traditional search with generative AI to enhance results for users.
While search is not yet a monetized feature, Reddit emphasized its potential: “It’s an enormous market and opportunity,” the company noted.
Generative AI: Transforming How Users Find Answers
Reddit believes generative AI search can outperform traditional search for many types of queries. “There’s a type of query we’re, I think, particularly good at — I would argue, the best on the internet — which is questions that have no answers, where the answer actually is multiple perspectives from lots of people,” said Reddit CEO Steve Huffman.
In contrast, traditional search primarily helps users navigate the platform, guiding them to the right link or subreddit. However, Huffman pointed out that large language models (LLMs) can enhance this experience as well: “So that’s the direction we’re going.”
User Growth Signals Strong Engagement
Reddit’s focus on search is already reflected in user engagement metrics. Weekly active users for traditional search rose 30% over the past year, from 60 million to 80 million. Meanwhile, AI-powered Reddit Answers saw an explosive increase, growing from 1 million weekly active users in Q1 2025 to 15 million by Q4.
“We’re seeing a lot of growth there, and I think there’s a lot of potential too,” Huffman added.
Enhancing the AI Experience
Reddit is modernizing the AI Answers interface, with pilots underway to make responses more media-rich. The platform is also rethinking its positioning: no longer just a social site, Reddit aims to become a go-to destination for answers.
Starting in Q3 2026, Reddit plans to remove the distinction between logged-in and logged-out users, using AI and machine learning to personalize the experience for every visitor.
Progress on Search Integration
In 2025, Reddit announced plans to combine its AI Answers feature with its traditional search engine to create a unified experience. By Q4, the company reported “significant progress” in merging these tools. Reddit also introduced five new languages on Reddit Answers and began piloting dynamic agents, including search results enriched with “media beyond text.”
Monetization Beyond Ads
Reddit’s AI content is also fueling its content licensing business, which allows other companies to train AI models on Reddit’s data. This business is included under the company’s “other” revenue category and is growing steadily. In Q4, other revenue rose 8% year-over-year to $36 million, while total revenue for 2025 increased 22% to $140 million.
Reddit’s strategic push into AI-powered search demonstrates the platform’s ambition to expand beyond social networking and capture a larger share of the growing generative AI market. By combining user-generated insights with advanced AI, Reddit hopes to redefine how people seek information online.
