Facebook Owner Imposes Ban on Russian State Media Networks

Meta Expands Ban on Russian State Media Networks

Meta’s Global Action Against Russian Media

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, has announced a comprehensive ban on several Russian state media networks. The company claims that these networks employ deceptive strategies to conduct influence operations and avoid detection on its platforms.

“After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets. Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity,” Meta stated in their official announcement. The restrictions are anticipated to take effect within the next few days.

Responses and Background

The Russian embassy in Washington, as well as the affected entities including RT (formerly Russia Today) and Rossiya Segodnya, have yet to respond to requests for comment from BBC. Russian state media outlets have faced increasing scrutiny due to allegations of attempts to sway political opinions in Western countries.

Previous Actions and Recent Developments

Meta’s latest move signifies a more stringent approach compared to previous measures. Two years ago, the company implemented limited actions such as halting advertisements from Russian state-controlled media and restricting the distribution of their content. This was further escalated following the onset of the Ukraine war, with Meta adhering to EU, UK, and Ukrainian requests to block certain Russian media outlets in those regions.

Earlier this month, the US government accused RT of paying a Tennessee-based firm $10 million (£7.6 million) to create and disseminate content to American audiences with concealed Russian government messaging. According to the indictment, the content, which often supported right-wing views on topics like immigration and gender, was covertly managed by two RT employees.

US Government Sanctions

In response to these developments, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently announced new sanctions against RT, labeling it a “de facto arm of Russia’s intelligence apparatus.” Blinken asserted that RT is part of a broader network of Russian-backed media operations aimed at subtly undermining democracy in the United States. He also noted that RT has a unit with cyber capabilities and connections to Russian intelligence.

RT, in a response to Blinken’s remarks, live-streamed the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) and dismissed the sanctions as part of the “US’s latest conspiracy theory.”
