Google’s New Gemma AI Model Is Lightweight Enough to Run on Smartphones

Google Unveils Lightweight AI Model Gemma 3n, Designed for Mobile Devices

At Google I/O 2025, the tech giant introduced Gemma 3n — a new AI model optimized to run efficiently on smartphones, laptops, and tablets, marking a major step in mobile AI integration. The model, part of Google’s growing “open” AI family, is now available in preview as of Tuesday.

AI That Works Without the Cloud

In a shift that aligns with recent trends in edge computing, Google has engineered Gemma 3n to operate locally on devices with less than 2GB of RAM. That means the model can run without requiring a constant internet connection or access to powerful cloud infrastructure.

“Gemma 3n shares the same architecture as Gemini Nano, and is engineered for incredible performance,” said Gus Martins, Gemma’s Product Manager, during the keynote address. The model supports multimodal capabilities — able to process audio, text, images, and video — while maintaining a compact footprint ideal for mobile hardware.

Offline AI models like this have seen a surge in popularity due to their lower cost and stronger data privacy, as they remove the need to send personal information to remote servers.

Expanding the Gemma Lineup: MedGemma for Healthcare AI

Alongside Gemma 3n, Google also announced MedGemma, the latest addition to its Health AI Developer Foundations initiative. According to Google, MedGemma is its most advanced open-source model for interpreting medical text and imagery.

“MedGemma [is] our […] collection of open models for multimodal [health] text and image understanding,” Martins explained. “MedGemma works great across a range of image and text applications, so that developers […] can adapt the models for their own health apps.”

This release opens up possibilities for startups and healthcare providers to integrate AI-driven diagnostics and patient analysis into their own applications.

SignGemma: Breaking New Ground in Accessibility

Looking ahead, Google is also developing SignGemma, an open model aimed at translating sign language into written or spoken text. The technology is designed to empower developers to build inclusive applications for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

By leveraging this AI model, businesses and software developers can create tools that improve accessibility, from customer service bots to real-time communication apps.

A Step Toward Decentralized, Inclusive AI

With the introduction of Gemma 3n, MedGemma, and SignGemma, Google is not only making AI more accessible and efficient, but also supporting key sectors like healthcare and accessibility tech. These releases are part of a broader movement in the AI industry to create models that can run on-device, increase user privacy, and serve real-world applications across diverse environments.
