Google and Warby Parker Team Up for $150M AI Glasses Project
Major Investment to Bring Smart Eyewear to Market
In a bold move into the augmented reality space, Google has announced it will invest up to $150 million in Warby Parker to co-develop AI-enhanced smart glasses using Android XR. The announcement was made during Google I/O 2025, highlighting a growing focus on wearable AI technology.
So far, Google has already funneled $75 million into Warby Parker to support both product development and commercialization efforts. The tech giant is prepared to invest an additional $75 million in exchange for equity in the eyewear company, contingent on Warby Parker meeting certain developmental and commercial milestones.
Broad Strategy with Multiple Partners
The Warby Parker collaboration is part of a wider initiative by Google to integrate its Gemini AI and augmented reality capabilities into smart eyewear. During the same keynote at Google I/O 2025, the company also unveiled partnerships with other notable brands, including Samsung and Gentle Monster.
This multi-pronged strategy appears to mirror Meta’s successful venture with Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses gained traction thanks to their stylish, recognizable frames and widespread retail availability. Google is likely aiming for a similar model by leveraging Warby Parker’s trendy designs and established retail presence.
A Long-Term Product Vision
According to a joint press release, Google and Warby Parker intend to roll out a series of AI-powered eyewear products over the coming years. The first line of smart glasses is slated to debut sometime “after 2025,” and will feature multimodal AI, accommodating both prescription and non-prescription lenses.
