YouTube Ad Revenue Nears $10 Billion as Streaming Dominance Grows
Alphabet’s Q2 earnings highlight YouTube’s stronghold in digital advertising, with a 13% year-over-year jump in ad revenue.
YouTube Outpaces Expectations With $9.8 Billion in Ad Sales
YouTube continues to assert its leadership in the global streaming arena, as Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported a 13% rise in advertising revenue for the platform in the second quarter of 2025. The video-sharing giant pulled in $9.8 billion in ad sales, up from $8.7 billion during the same quarter last year.
This figure exceeded Wall Street expectations, which had anticipated YouTube’s Q2 revenue to land around $9.6 billion. The performance reflects growing advertiser confidence in the platform’s reach and engagement, especially as digital video continues to absorb traditional TV budgets.
YouTube’s Growing Share of TV Viewership
The line between traditional television and streaming continues to blur, and YouTube is reaping the rewards. A Nielsen report revealed that YouTube has held the largest share of TV viewing for three consecutive months, commanding 12.4% of total time spent watching television content.
This surge is largely driven by the platform’s growing prominence on connected TVs, where long-form content and YouTube creators now compete directly with major broadcasters and streaming services.
Rivals Step Up Advertising Efforts
The streaming ad space is becoming increasingly competitive, with other major players stepping up to challenge YouTube’s lead. Netflix, for instance, recently announced plans to double its advertising revenue within the year, according to the company’s latest earnings call. Although Netflix has not yet released official ad revenue numbers, Madison & Wall analyst estimates put the figure at around $3 billion.
Elsewhere, platforms like HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video are intensifying their ad strategies, with increased placements and new ad-supported tiers aimed at capturing more ad spend.
Alphabet Reports Strong Overall Earnings
Beyond YouTube, Alphabet delivered a solid performance across its broader portfolio. The company posted total quarterly revenue of $96.4 billion, also marking a 13% year-over-year increase. These results underscore the tech giant’s resilience in a dynamic digital economy and the continued growth of its core advertising business.
