Meta Launches AI Assistant for Facebook Dating
Meta has announced plans to introduce an AI-powered assistant to Facebook Dating, aiming to make online matchmaking more personalized and efficient.
The new chatbot is designed to help users identify matches that closely align with their preferences. For instance, a user could ask the AI to find “a Brooklyn girl in tech” or request assistance refining their dating profile. According to Meta, this AI integration is also part of a broader effort to “help people avoid swipe fatigue” through a feature called Meet Cute, which delivers a weekly “surprise match” selected by the platform’s algorithm.
Growth Among Younger Users
Facebook Dating has seen increasing engagement, particularly among adults aged 18 to 29. Meta reports a 10% year-over-year growth in matches within this age group, with hundreds of thousands of new profiles created monthly. While these numbers are modest compared to major competitors, they signal steady traction. For context, Tinder boasts around 50 million daily active users, while Hinge has approximately 10 million daily active users.
AI Integration Becoming Standard in Dating Apps
The move by Meta reflects a broader trend of incorporating AI into dating platforms. Newer apps like Sitch have tried to distinguish themselves by offering AI-powered features. Meanwhile, Match Group—owner of Tinder, Hinge, OKCupid, and other dating apps—entered into a partnership with OpenAI last year as part of a $20 million-plus AI investment. This strategy comes amid financial challenges; Match Group’s stock price has dropped about 68% over the past five years.
The investment has already led to features such as Tinder’s AI photo selector, which scans users’ camera rolls to suggest optimal profile images, alongside AI-driven matchmaking. Similarly, Hinge allows users to enhance responses to profile prompts using AI.
Bumble Explores AI-Powered Experiences
Bumble has also introduced comparable AI functionalities. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd stirred conversation last year when she proposed the idea of personal “AI concierges” that could go on dates with other AI profiles to gauge compatibility—a glimpse into a future where AI could play a more active role in the dating process.
As AI continues to reshape online dating, platforms are increasingly betting on technology to deliver smarter, more personalized experiences for users.
