OpenAI Introduces User Controls for ChatGPT’s Response Tone

OpenAI Expands Personalisation Options for ChatGPT’s Communication Style

OpenAI has introduced new customisation features that give ChatGPT users greater control over how the AI communicates, including its level of warmth, enthusiasm and emoji usage. The update was revealed via a social media post from OpenAI and marks the latest step in the company’s efforts to refine how its chatbot interacts with users.

New Tone Controls Added to Personalisation Menu

The newly released settings are available through ChatGPT’s Personalisation menu. Users can now adjust elements such as warmth, enthusiasm and emoji use by selecting More, Less, or Default.

In addition to tone, OpenAI has also included similar controls for ChatGPT’s use of headers and lists, allowing responses to better match individual preferences and communication styles.

These new options build on the existing ability to define a “base style and tone.” OpenAI introduced preset styles — including Professional, Candid, and Quirky — in November, enabling users to guide the chatbot’s overall voice.

Ongoing Refinements to ChatGPT’s Personality

ChatGPT’s tone has been a recurring focus for OpenAI throughout the year. The company previously reversed one update after users criticised the chatbot for being “too sycophant-y.”

More recently, OpenAI made changes to GPT-5, aiming to make it “warmer and friendlier” following feedback from users who felt the newer model came across as colder and less engaging.

These adjustments highlight the challenge of balancing friendliness with neutrality as AI systems become more integrated into daily workflows.

Academic and Ethical Concerns Around AI Behaviour

While many users welcome greater personalisation, some academics and AI critics have raised concerns about chatbot behaviour more broadly. Critics argue that chatbots’ tendency to praise users and reinforce their beliefs can act as a “dark pattern,” potentially encouraging addictive usage and having a negative impact on users’ mental health.

As AI tools continue to evolve, these concerns are likely to remain central to discussions around responsible AI design and user wellbeing.

Looking Ahead

By allowing users to fine-tune how ChatGPT responds, OpenAI appears to be shifting more control to individuals rather than enforcing a single default personality. For businesses and professionals, these tools could help ensure AI-generated responses better align with brand voice, workplace norms and audience expectations.
