LMArena Reaches $1.7B Valuation Just Four Months After Product Launch

LMArena Secures $1.7 Billion Valuation Just Months After Launch

Rapid Growth Sparks Investor Interest

LMArena, a startup that began as a UC Berkeley research initiative in 2023, has announced a $150 million Series A funding round, achieving a post-money valuation of $1.7 billion. The round was led by Felicis and UC Berkeley’s own investment fund, UC Investments.

The company’s commercial journey began with a $100 million seed round in May at a $600 million valuation, meaning LMArena has raised a total of $250 million in just seven months.

Crowdsourced AI Leaderboards Drive Popularity

LMArena is widely recognized for its crowdsourced AI model performance leaderboards. Through its consumer-facing website, users can submit a prompt, which is sent to two AI models, and then vote on which model performs better. According to the company, these results now come from over 5 million monthly users across 150 countries, generating 60 million conversations per month. The data powers leaderboards ranking models across tasks such as text, web development, vision, text-to-image, and more.

The platform evaluates models from a range of providers, including OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and Grok, as well as specialized models for image generation, reasoning, or text-to-image capabilities.

From Open Research Project to Commercial Venture

LMArena started life as Chatbot Arena, an open research project developed by UC Berkeley researchers Anastasios Angelopoulos and Wei-Lin Chiang. Initially funded through grants and donations, the project quickly attracted attention within the AI community.

As LMArena transitioned to a revenue-generating company, it partnered with select model makers such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic to make flagship models available for evaluation by its community. In April, a paper by a group of competitors suggested that these partnerships could allow model makers to game LMArena’s benchmarks — an allegation the startup strongly denied.

Launching AI Evaluations and Growing ARR

In September, LMArena officially launched its commercial service, AI Evaluations, enabling enterprises, model labs, and developers to commission model assessments through its community. Less than four months after launch, the company reported an annualized “consumption rate” — its version of annual recurring revenue (ARR) — of $30 million as of December.

Series A Draws Top Venture Capital

The rapid growth and strong user engagement attracted significant VC interest for the Series A round. Alongside Felicis and UC Investments, investors include Andreessen Horowitz, The House Fund, LDVP, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Laude Ventures.

With its innovative crowdsourced model evaluation system and expanding enterprise services, LMArena is rapidly positioning itself as a key player in the AI benchmarking space
