OpenAI Absorbs Health Data Startup Torch
OpenAI has confirmed the acquisition of Torch, a small health technology startup, though it did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. According to an unnamed source cited by The Information, the transaction was valued at $100 million in equity. As part of the agreement, Torch’s four-person team will join OpenAI, a move both companies publicly acknowledged.
The acquisition reflects OpenAI’s growing interest in healthcare-focused applications and data infrastructure, particularly as artificial intelligence plays an expanding role in personal health management.
Building a Unified Medical Record for AI
Prior to the acquisition, Torch was developing an application designed to consolidate an individual’s medical data into a single system optimized for AI use. The platform aimed to aggregate information from a wide array of sources, including doctor visits, lab results, wearable devices, and patient portals, as well as consumer wellness tests.
The Torch team described its technology as “a medical memory for AI, unifying scattered records into a context engine.” The concept focused on solving one of healthcare’s persistent challenges: fragmented data spread across multiple systems that are difficult for both patients and AI tools to interpret holistically.
Roots at Forward Health
Torch’s founding team originally connected while working at Forward Health, according to a post on X by Torch co-founder Ilya Abyzov. Forward gained attention for its AI-powered doctors’ offices and ambitious vision for tech-driven healthcare delivery.
Despite raising over $400 million, Forward abruptly shut down in late 2024, marking a sharp end to what had been one of the sector’s most high-profile ventures. Torch’s acquisition by OpenAI offers a starkly different outcome for the team and its technology.
Integration Into ChatGPT Health
Rather than winding down, Torch’s technology and talent will now be folded into ChatGPT Health, OpenAI’s newly announced service aimed at helping users analyze and manage their health through the ChatGPT platform.
This acqui-hire positions OpenAI to accelerate development in healthcare-specific AI tools, leveraging Torch’s experience in medical data aggregation to enhance personalized health insights within its chatbot ecosystem.
