AI Cloud Startup Runpod Reaches $120M ARR After Humble Reddit Beginnings

From Reddit Post to $120M ARR: How Runpod Built an AI Cloud Empire

Runpod, the AI app hosting platform launched just four years ago, has reached an impressive $120 million annual revenue run rate (ARR), founders Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh told TechCrunch. Their journey is a striking example of how skill, timing, and a bit of luck can turn a small project into a booming tech business.

Humble Beginnings in New Jersey Basements

The story starts in late 2021, when Lu and Singh, both corporate developers at Comcast, realized that their shared hobby—mining Ethereum in their New Jersey basements—was no longer fulfilling. While their mining rigs earned some cryptocurrency, the profits weren’t enough to cover their initial investment, and the upcoming Ethereum network upgrade, “The Merge,” meant mining would soon end.

“It got boring after a couple of months,” Lu said. But the pair had already convinced their wives to let them invest roughly $50,000 in the hobby. They needed a way to put those GPUs to productive use.

Drawing on their work experience in machine learning, they repurposed their mining rigs into AI servers, even before ChatGPT or DALL-E 2 were widely known.

“We were seeing how really god-awful the software stack was for dealing with these GPUs,” Lu explained. “Runpod was born because we felt that the actual experience of developing software on top of GPUs was just hot garbage.”

Launching Runpod and Finding Beta Users

By early 2022, they were ready to unveil Runpod, a platform for hosting AI apps. The service emphasizes speed, configurable hardware (including serverless options), and developer tools like APIs and command-line interfaces. Early integrations included popular tools such as Jupyter notebooks, but the founders faced the challenge of finding beta testers.

“As first-time founders, we didn’t really know how to market or how to do anything,” Lu recalled. “So I’m like, all right, let’s just post on Reddit.”

Their Reddit strategy paid off. Offering free access to Runpod in exchange for feedback helped them land beta users, who soon became paying customers. Within nine months, they had quit their jobs and crossed the $1 million revenue mark.

Bootstrapping Growth Before Venture Capital

Even as demand grew, challenges persisted. “Six months in, business users were like, ‘Hey, I want to actually run real business stuff on your platform. But I cannot run it on servers that are in people’s basements,’” Lu said.

Initially, they avoided venture capital, instead partnering with data centers on revenue-sharing deals to scale capacity. “If we don’t have the GPUs, the market sentiment, the user sentiment changes. Because when they don’t see capacity from you, they go somewhere else,” Singh noted.

Their user base expanded, fueled by communities on Reddit and Discord, especially after ChatGPT’s launch. Venture capitalists also began noticing Runpod. Dell Technologies Capital partner Radhika Malik reached out after seeing posts on Reddit, marking the founders’ first VC interaction.

“Radhika was super helpful, even at the first conversation,” Lu said. She guided him through understanding how VCs think and stayed in touch.

Despite the attention, the company operated without funding for almost two years, never offering a free tier and avoiding debt, ensuring the business could at least sustain itself.

Scaling With Investors and a Growing User Base

By May 2024, Runpod’s early bet on AI hosting was paying off. Their platform served 100,000 developers, and they secured a $20 million seed round co-led by Dell and Intel’s VC arms, with participation from Nat Friedman and Hugging Face co-founder Julien Chaumond, who had discovered the platform while using it and reached out via support chat.

Today, Runpod boasts 500,000 developers, including individuals and Fortune 500 enterprise teams with multimillion-dollar annual spend. Their cloud spans 31 regions worldwide, with notable users such as Replit, Cursor, OpenAI, Perplexity, Wix, and Zillow.

Competing in a Crowded Market

Runpod operates in a fiercely competitive landscape alongside AWS, Microsoft, Google, and specialized providers like CoreWeave and Core Scientific. Yet the founders differentiate themselves with a developer-first approach.

“Our goal is to be what this next generation of software developers grows up on,” Lu said. They envision a future where programming evolves into creating and managing AI agents, positioning Runpod as the platform of choice for the next wave of software development.
