The Art of Storytelling Through Film

Combining contemporary art, filmmaking and technical expertise, Cyprus-based visual artist Michalakis Georgiou explores the power of moving images to capture stories, preserve memories and offer new perspectives on the world around us.

In a world where images are constantly created and consumed, the ability to tell a meaningful story through film has become increasingly valuable. For Cypriot filmmaker and visual artist Michalakis Georgiou, filmmaking is more than a technical process. It is a creative language, a way of observing people, exploring places and translating experiences into visual narratives that connect with audiences.

Based in Larnaka, Georgiou brings together a background in contemporary fine art and a strong understanding of filmmaking techniques. His approach moves between artistic experimentation and visual storytelling, allowing him to develop films that go beyond documenting events to explore the stories behind them.

From Fine Art to Moving Images

Georgiou’s artistic journey began with an interest in visual expression. He studied Fine Art at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom, graduating with a BA (Hons) in 2019, before continuing at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh, where he completed an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice in 2021.

His academic background introduced him to different forms of artistic expression, including installation, photography, found objects and moving images. These disciplines continue to influence his work, shaping the way he approaches composition, atmosphere, movement and the relationship between an image and its meaning.

Rather than separating filmmaking from contemporary art, Georgiou sees the two as interconnected practices. His artistic knowledge informs his visual narratives, while his technical abilities allow him to translate creative concepts into moving images.

Stories Beyond the Camera

At the centre of Georgiou’s filmmaking practice is an interest in people and their stories.

Whether documenting an artistic process, exploring cultural heritage or following the development of a creative project, he approaches each subject with curiosity and attention to detail. His films seek to capture not only what is happening, but also the emotions, relationships and experiences that give each story its identity.

This approach is particularly evident in his ongoing creative partnership with Cypriot textile designer and artist Michalis Pantelidis.

Together, they have worked across a diverse range of projects, including the Pierides Museum, Athienou – Flavours and Traditions, Beauty Line, Marks & Spencer and Cavo Zoe, alongside projects connected to Larnaka 2030.

Through these collaborations, Georgiou has documented creative processes, from initial research and encounters with local communities to the development and presentation of the final work.

His filmmaking adds another dimension to these projects, allowing the stories behind the artworks to reach audiences beyond the exhibition space or finished object.

Art, Culture and Community

Alongside filmmaking, Georgiou maintains an active practice as an independent visual artist, participating in exhibitions and cultural initiatives in Cyprus and internationally.

His work explores abstraction, reinterpretation and the possibilities of transforming familiar materials and experiences into new artistic forms.

In 2024, he participated in the NEEDLE Residency & Festival, creating installations using discarded objects and exploring ideas of recontextualisation. He has also co-curated exhibitions, including Views at Enalia Gallery and Reality (Illusion) at Elements Gallery.

His artistic research extends into questions of history, identity and collective memory. Through collaborations with artist Sithabile Mlotshwa, he has contributed to visual research exploring Cyprus’s colonial legacies and documented artistic performances and exhibitions.

As a close collaborator on projects associated with Larnaka 2030, Georgiou contributes to initiatives exploring the city, its communities and the stories shaping its identity.

These experiences reflect his interest in film as both an artistic expression and a means of preserving cultural narratives.

Where Artistic Vision Meets Technical Knowledge

What distinguishes Georgiou’s approach is the balance between artistic sensitivity and technical understanding.

Filmmaking requires more than an eye for composition. It involves understanding light, sound, movement, rhythm and editing, and recognising how these elements work together to communicate a story.

For Georgiou, technical knowledge becomes a tool for creative freedom, allowing him to experiment with visual approaches while maintaining a coherent narrative.

His background in contemporary art encourages him to look beyond conventional filmmaking structures, finding inspiration in details, textures and unexpected moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This flexibility allows him to move between documentary storytelling, artistic films and collaborative creative projects, adapting his visual language to each subject.

A Continuing Creative Journey

As his practice evolves, Georgiou remains interested in the possibilities that emerge when filmmaking, contemporary art and collaboration come together.

His work demonstrates how moving images can connect creative disciplines, giving artists, cultural institutions and communities another way to share their ideas and experiences.

For Georgiou, the camera is not simply a device for recording what exists. It is a means of discovering what lies beneath the surface and giving those stories a visual life of their own.

Because the most memorable films do more than show us something. They make us feel, reflect and see the world from a different perspective.
