Apple Eyes Price Increase for Upcoming iPhones, but Tariff Link Remains Unclear
Apple is reportedly preparing to raise the prices of its new iPhone lineup slated for release this autumn. However, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the tech giant is seeking to distance the move from ongoing U.S.-China tariff tensions.
Shifting the Narrative: Price Hike Tied to Features, Not Tariffs
While the company has not issued an official statement, sources within Apple’s supply chain suggest the higher price points may be attributed to upcoming technological enhancements and design upgrades rather than escalating import duties. The goal appears to be to position the cost increase as a value-driven decision rather than a reactive one to trade policy changes.
“The company is considering instead linking the price hikes to other developments, which might include new features and designs,” The Wall Street Journal reported, citing anonymous supply chain sources.
Tariff Impact: $900 Million Estimated Hit in Q3
Despite its strategic messaging, Apple is facing significant pressure from increased tariffs on imports from China. The estimated impact on the company could reach $900 million in the third quarter alone, per the report. So far, Apple has refrained from confirming whether these tariffs will directly affect consumer pricing.
To mitigate the effects, the company has reportedly increased its production operations in India, reducing its reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
Trade War Paused – For Now
In a temporary reprieve, the United States and China agreed on Monday to a 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs to create space for further negotiations. This pause follows Washington’s announcement of key tariff exemptions for products critical to the tech sector—including smartphones, laptops, hard drives, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
However, a previous 20% tariff on a range of Chinese goods remains in place, continuing to cast uncertainty over the global electronics supply chain.
A New Era for iPhone Design
While pricing concerns dominate headlines, Apple enthusiasts also have something new to look forward to: a radically redesigned iPhone. Reports indicate that the upcoming models will include an ultra-thin design—signaling a new design direction for the brand.
Looking further ahead, Apple has even more ambitious plans in store for 2027. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company aims to unveil a “mostly glass, curved iPhone” without any screen cutouts. The launch would mark the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone.
“The company plans to release a ‘mostly glass, curved iPhone’ with no cutouts on the iPhone’s 20th anniversary,” Gurman noted.
This would follow the last major design overhaul in 2017, when Apple introduced the iPhone X for the smartphone’s 10th anniversary.
