ChatGPT Mobile App Surpasses $2 Billion in Revenue, Averaging $2.91 Per Install

ChatGPT Mobile App Surpasses $2 Billion in Global Spending, Leaves Competitors Far Behind

Explosive Revenue Growth Since Launch

OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app has become a financial powerhouse since its release in May 2023. According to Appfigures, a leading app intelligence firm, the iOS and Android versions of ChatGPT have now accumulated $2 billion in worldwide consumer spending. This milestone represents nearly 30 times the combined lifetime spending of its closest mobile rivals, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.

2025 Revenue Momentum

The app’s performance in 2025 has been nothing short of remarkable. Between January and July this year alone, ChatGPT’s mobile app generated $1.35 billion, a staggering 673% year-over-year increase compared to the $174 million earned in the same period of 2024. That translates to an average of $193 million per month, up from just $25 million per month last year.

In contrast, Grok, the next strongest competitor, reported only $25.6 million in revenue so far this year—a figure that equals just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s total. Grok’s monthly revenue averages $3.6 million, underscoring the widening gap.

Market Context: Beyond Mobile

While these figures underline ChatGPT’s dominance on mobile platforms, they don’t reflect the entire revenue ecosystem of AI providers. Both individual and enterprise users can purchase subscriptions through web platforms, and AI companies also monetize through API usage and other services. Nevertheless, Appfigures’ data highlights how strongly consumers are engaging with ChatGPT via app stores.

Grok’s Late Entry Into Mobile

Part of this disparity can be explained by market timing. xAI’s Grok, introduced in November 2023, was initially tied exclusively to the X platform and did not launch stand-alone iOS and Android apps until January and March 2025, respectively. This late entry limited its ability to compete with ChatGPT’s early lead.

Spending Per Download: ChatGPT on Top

On a per-user basis, ChatGPT also leads in lifetime spending per download, averaging $2.91. By comparison, Claude averages $2.55, Grok just $0.75, and Copilot a mere $0.28.

In the U.S. market, ChatGPT’s figures are even stronger: average spending per download stands at $10, with the U.S. accounting for 38% of global revenue. Germany ranks second, contributing 5.3% of ChatGPT’s lifetime earnings.

Downloads: Global Adoption Surges

The app’s revenue success is mirrored in its download statistics. ChatGPT has been installed an estimated 690 million times worldwide, far surpassing Grok’s 39.5 million installs. This context adds weight to Elon Musk’s complaints about the App Store’s alleged favoritism of ChatGPT in its Top Charts.

ChatGPT continues to build momentum, with average monthly downloads reaching 45 million in 2025, a 180% increase from 16 million per month during January–July 2024.

So far this year, the app has seen 318 million new installs, compared to 113 million in the same period last year, marking a 2.8x growth rate. India leads globally, accounting for 13.7% of lifetime downloads, followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.

Conclusion

ChatGPT’s mobile dominance shows no signs of slowing down. With billions in consumer spending, rapidly increasing downloads, and a strong lead over rivals like Grok, Claude, and Copilot, the app is setting new benchmarks in mobile AI adoption. While other platforms may catch up in the long term, OpenAI’s head start and consumer traction position ChatGPT as the clear market leader in mobile AI apps today.
