Simplifying AI Access on Mobile
Google announced on Wednesday that it is making it easier for mobile users to access AI Mode in Chrome. The new feature lets users ask complex, conversational questions and follow up for deeper insights—directly within Google Search.
To enhance convenience, the company has added a dedicated shortcut button for AI Mode just below the search bar on the “New Tab” page in Chrome. This streamlined access is currently available in the United States and will roll out soon to 160 additional countries, supporting languages such as Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and more.
A Strategic Move to Retain Users
Google’s decision to improve accessibility to AI Mode is widely seen as an effort to encourage users to stay within its ecosystem, rather than turning to competing AI tools.
The rollout of this shortcut follows Google’s global expansion of AI Mode earlier this year to 180 new countries, alongside broader language support that includes Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese.
Competing in the AI Search Space
Originally introduced in March 2024, AI Mode was designed to rival popular AI-driven search services such as Perplexity AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search. Since its debut, Google has consistently added new functionality to make AI Mode more versatile and user-friendly.
Recently, the company unveiled new agentic capabilities—tools that let users perform actions such as booking event tickets or scheduling beauty and wellness appointments directly within AI Mode. These updates build on earlier releases, including restaurant reservation features launched in August.
Building Smarter Tools for Productivity
In July, Google introduced a Canvas feature within AI Mode, enabling users to create study plans and organize notes across multiple sessions via a side panel. The tool now also integrates Google Lens, allowing users to ask questions about items displayed on their desktop screens—further merging visual recognition with conversational AI.
The Future of AI in Chrome
By simplifying access and steadily expanding features, Google is positioning AI Mode as a central component of mobile browsing and productivity. With ongoing rollouts across new regions and languages, the company aims to make AI-assisted search an integral part of the global user experience.
