Invisible Wounds, Unbreakable Laws: Confronting the Hidden Epidemic of Mental, Verbal, and Financial Domestic Violence

By Angelina Alyabyeva, Guest Speaker at the Ms. Greece and Cyprus World International 2026

In this world, there is a dangerous, pervasive misconception that if an abuser doesn’t leave a physical mark, they haven’t committed a crime. They are wrong. As a legal advocate and voice for the silenced, I am stepping onto the stage on May 24th at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre for the Ms. Greece and Cyprus World International 2026 event to talk about a different kind of war—one fought not with fists, but with whispers, threats, and paper.

When we discuss domestic violence in legal and legislative circles, we must radically expand our definition of harm. The law has historically required tangible evidence—bruises, fractures, blood. But the most insidious forms of abuse leave no physical scar; instead, they erode the victim’s psychological and economic autonomy until they are entirely trapped.

The Blade of the Tongue: Verbal Abuse as a Legal Violation

The law is slowly catching up to what survivors have long known: a man who uses his tongue like a knife is just as dangerous as a man who uses his fists. In clinical and legal terms, this is categorized as “verbal abuse,” but in reality, it is a profound violation of the soul.

Constant belittling, screaming, and systematic degradation—making a woman feel small until she actually forgets who she is—is a form of psychological torture. Perpetrators often disguise this behavior under the archaic guise of “leadership” or “discipline.” Let me be clear: that is not leadership; it is absolute cowardice. Legally, we must begin to treat severe verbal degradation not merely as “marital discord,” but as the foundational tactic of coercive control—a recognized pattern of abuse that strips away a person’s fundamental human rights.

The Paper Cage: Financial and Immigration Coercion

If verbal abuse is the blade, financial and immigration abuse is the cage. And in Cyprus, this is an issue that demands immediate legal and societal attention.

There is a specific, legally complex vulnerability that affects foreign women married to Cypriot citizens. I am talking about perpetrators who weaponize a woman’s residency documents or her pending status as the wife of a Cypriot to keep her imprisoned. To look a woman in the eye and imply, “I hold your future passport, so I hold your life,” is an abuse of power that amounts to modern-day slavery. It is a debt no honorable woman should ever be forced to collect, and it is a gross manipulation of immigration law that lawmakers and family courts must actively penalize.

Coupled with this is overt financial abuse. Taking away a woman’s purse, monitoring her spending, or denying her access to her own bank accounts so she physically cannot walk away is a classic hostage situation. Abusers often masquerade this financial strangulation as “providing” for the family. We must strip away this semantic illusion. Controlling a victim’s finances to ensure her captivity is not provision; it is a crime.

A Mission, Not Just a Pageant: The INSAVIOR Solution

To fight a war fought with paper and whispers, we must arm potential victims with concrete, legally sound tools. This upcoming event is not just a pageant; it is a mission. We are raising our voices to protect the family unit by protecting the individuals within it.

We cannot simply talk about the law; we must provide accessible avenues to justice. That is why I am proud to stand alongside Katarina Belova and champion the INSAVIOR app. This application is a revolutionary digital lifeline. It is designed to securely document abuse, provide legal resources, and ensure that no woman has to stand alone when the walls of psychological, verbal, or financial abuse start closing in. In cases of invisible abuse, digital documentation is often the only way to build a robust legal case. INSAVIOR provides that crucial evidence-gathering capability safely.

Join the Movement on May 24th

We are at a critical juncture in how society and the justice system handle domestic violence. It is time to codify into law what we already know in our hearts: that financial control, immigration threats, and systematic verbal degradation are criminal acts that destroy lives.

I invite legal professionals, advocates, and the public to join me on May 24th at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. Let us rewrite the narrative, demand legislative evolution, and stand united for the women who have been told their suffering isn’t “real” because it didn’t leave a bruise.
