Snapchat Expands Public Conversations with New “Topic Chats” Feature

Snapchat, long known for prioritizing private messaging, is now stepping into public conversations with the launch of its “Topic Chats” feature. The platform says this new addition allows users to discuss trending topics and join communities ranging from Formula 1 to reality TV series like “Below Deck.”

Privacy and Safety at the Forefront

Despite the public nature of Topic Chats, Snapchat emphasizes user privacy. Profiles will remain private to anyone not on a user’s friends list, preventing unsolicited friend requests or direct messages. While a user’s display name will appear next to their message, others won’t be able to tap through to view the profile. Unlike usernames, display names also cannot be used to search for someone, the company told TechCrunch via email.

To maintain safety, Snapchat confirmed it will employ LLM technology along with other moderation tools to monitor Topic Chats. Messages must comply with Snapchat’s Community Guidelines, and users can report inappropriate content. Violators may face warnings or account blocks.

Connecting Users Through Shared Interests

Topic Chats will display which chats a user’s friends have joined, making it easier for people to discover shared interests. Beyond text conversations, the feature will also highlight related Spotlight videos, Snapchat’s TikTok-like short-form content.

Previously, public discussions on Snapchat were limited to Spotlight comments. The company said Topic Chats were inspired by how users interact publicly in these comments, offering a more structured way to engage.

“Snapchatters create billions of Snaps every day, sharing moments with friends and family, and as we’ve expanded services like Spotlight, we’ve also found that the Snapchat community loves commenting publicly about trending topics and events,” the company explained in a blog post.

Rollout and Availability

Topic Chats will be gradually introduced in Canada, New Zealand, and the U.S., appearing in Chat shortcuts, search, Stories, and Spotlight videos. Users can join a chatroom by clicking a large yellow “Join the Chat” button displayed on Stories or Spotlight videos.

Snapchat also noted that messages sent in Topic Chats will be retained for up to five years, providing a long-term record of public discussions.
