Spotify Gains 5 Million Premium Subscribers, Reports Record Operating Income

Spotify’s Subscriber Growth and Record Profits Mark Strong Q1 Performance

Streaming giant adds 5M premium users, posts €509M in operating income, and pushes further into video and AI.

Spotify has kicked off 2025 on a high note, announcing a surge in premium subscriptions and a record-setting quarter in terms of operating profit. The audio-streaming powerhouse revealed on Tuesday that it added 5 million new paying subscribers in the first quarter, a 12% year-over-year increase, bringing the total premium user count to 268 million.

This marks the second-highest premium subscriber total in the company’s history and represents the strongest first-quarter net gain in paid subscriptions since 2020.

“This brings the total to 268 million, marking the second-highest total ever and the highest net addition of paid subs for a first quarter since 2020.”

Profit Milestone: Record Operating Income, Yet Below Forecast

Spotify also reported record operating income of €509 million (approx. $528 million) for the quarter, exceeding its previous record of €477 million ($509.48 million) from the prior quarter. Despite this milestone, the figure fell short of the company’s own forecast of €548 million ($625 million).

Overall, Spotify’s total revenue rose 15% year-over-year to €4.2 billion ($4.8 billion), driven by strong gains in both its subscription and advertising segments.

Monthly Active Users Continue to Climb

The platform now boasts 678 million monthly active users (MAUs) globally, with 423 million of those on the ad-supported tier. This user growth reflects Spotify’s expanding reach across international markets and its efforts to diversify offerings beyond traditional music streaming.

Dominating the Streaming Market—and Chasing YouTube

Spotify maintains its lead over key competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music, thanks in part to its aggressive expansion into video podcasts. The company now hosts over 330,000 video podcast shows, putting it in direct competition with platforms like YouTube.

One of Spotify’s major initiatives—the Spotify Partner Program—has already delivered tangible results. In Q1 alone, the program has paid out more than $100 million to podcast creators, underlining Spotify’s commitment to supporting and monetizing content creators.

“Its recently launched Spotify Partner Program has paid out more than $100 million to podcast creators in the first quarter.”

Expanding AI Playlists to 40+ Global Markets

Continuing to innovate, Spotify has also rolled out its AI Playlist feature to over 40 international markets, including Ghana, Jamaica, Fiji, Singapore, Kenya, and the Bahamas. The AI Playlist function allows users to generate music collections based on natural language prompts—another sign of Spotify’s pivot toward personalized, tech-driven experiences.

A Look Ahead

Despite narrowly missing its operating income guidance, Spotify’s momentum in subscriber growth, content monetization, and AI expansion suggests a robust outlook for the rest of the year. Its push into podcasting and new technologies continues to reshape the music streaming landscape—and redefine what a modern audio platform can be.
