IXI Raises $36.5M to Innovate Prescription Eyewear with Autofocus Technology
A new startup from Finland is poised to revolutionize the world of prescription glasses. IXI, based in Helsinki, is combining eye-tracking technology and liquid crystal lenses to create glasses that automatically adjust to the wearer’s vision needs, particularly for presbyopia, a condition that affects near vision as people age. This breakthrough innovation promises to offer a seamless, low-power solution for clearer vision without the need for manual adjustments.
A Big Step Forward for IXI
After four years of development, IXI has officially emerged from stealth mode, unveiling the successful raise of $36.5 million in Series A funding. The investment is set to fuel the company’s efforts to bring its first commercial product to market. Notably, Amazon’s Alexa Fund is among the prominent backers, signaling strong support from major tech players for IXI’s vision.
The latest funding round is led by the London-based venture capital firm, Plural, with additional backing from Tesi, byFounders, Heartcore, Eurazeo, FOV Ventures, Tiny Supercomputer, and returning investors. Previous backers include Maki.vc, First Fellow, firstminute capital, and Bragiel Brothers, as well as Illusian, a family office representing European founders similar to the renowned ICONIQ in the U.S.
A Growing Market with Huge Potential
CEO Niko Eiden, who co-founded IXI alongside Chief Algorithm Officer Ville Miettinen, shared his belief in the untapped potential of eyewear. “Eyewear is the last great frontier,” he said. The market itself is vast, with estimates suggesting that the eyewear industry is valued at over $200 billion and is growing at an impressive rate of over 8% annually, outpacing the growth of both smartwatches and smartphones.
From Nokia to IXI: A Team with Deep Expertise
IXI’s founders and team bring a wealth of experience in cutting-edge mobile technology. Previously, they worked on groundbreaking projects at Nokia, which later contributed to the development of Microsoft’s HoloLens XR headgear. This background in mobile and mixed-reality technology helped lay the foundation for IXI’s innovative approach to eyewear. The co-founders later went on to establish Varjo, a mixed-reality headset company that has raised over $200 million in venture funding from major investors like Atomico, EQT, and Foxconn.
Despite their success in the VR and mixed-reality spaces, Eiden admitted that these technologies still face significant challenges. “VR and mixed reality… continue to be super interesting,” he said, “but it’s a really hard space to be in because there is no market, and the volumes are not there.” Even with heavy investments from tech giants like Meta, Apple, and Microsoft, the VR market has not seen the explosive growth many expected, with sales still in the single-digit billions—small compared to the massive scale of consumer electronics.
The Unique Vision of IXI’s Eyewear
While virtual and augmented reality are exciting technologies, IXI sees eyewear as an underexplored area in the realm of medical devices. Eiden points out that unlike other wearable technologies, not many companies have focused on how technology can improve eyesight. “There really aren’t that many trying to use technology to actually fix eyesight, and that’s kind of the cool part for us,” he explained.
IXI’s glasses are not designed for browsing social media, checking emails, or playing interactive games. Instead, they focus solely on improving vision for those affected by presbyopia. With this technology, wearers will experience clearer vision without the need for bulky glasses or constant manual adjustments.
Looking Ahead
As IXI prepares to launch its innovative eyewear, the company’s focus remains on providing a simple, effective solution to a common problem—blurry near vision. With its advanced technology and the backing of major investors, IXI is set to make waves in the eyewear industry and redefine what it means to wear prescription glasses.
