Apple Set to Transform Siri Into an AI-Powered Chatbot, Report Finds

Apple Signals a New Direction for Siri

Apple is reportedly preparing a significant overhaul of Siri that could reposition the long-standing voice assistant as a full-fledged AI chatbot, bringing it closer in function to tools like ChatGPT. According to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the redesigned Siri could become a central highlight of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this June.

Sources familiar with the matter suggest the updated Siri experience would be rolled out as part of iOS 27, marking one of Apple’s most ambitious AI-focused updates to date.

Inside Apple’s Siri Chatbot Project

Internally known by the codename “Campos,” the new Siri is expected to support both voice and text-based interactions, expanding how users communicate with the assistant across Apple devices.

This approach appears to represent a shift in thinking from Apple’s leadership. Apple’s senior vice president Craig Federighi previously emphasized that he did not want Siri to function as a traditional chatbot, stating that Apple’s AI should be “integrated so it’s there within reach whenever you need it.” However, growing competition in the AI space may have prompted a change in strategy.

Competitive Pressure Reshapes Apple’s AI Strategy

Apple’s renewed focus on Siri comes amid mounting pressure from rivals that have gained momentum with conversational AI platforms. The rapid adoption of AI chatbots across consumer and enterprise markets has raised expectations for digital assistants, an area where Apple has historically taken a more cautious approach.

Adding to the urgency, Apple may be monitoring developments at OpenAI, which is reportedly planning to move into hardware products. That initiative is said to be led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, a move that could pose a longer-term competitive threat.

Catching Up in the AI Race

Apple has openly struggled to keep pace with competitors in artificial intelligence. The company delayed the launch of a “more personalized Siri” multiple times and spent much of last year evaluating potential AI partnerships.

During this period, Apple tested technologies from several major players, including OpenAI and Anthropic, before ultimately selecting Google’s Gemini as its AI partner. The partnership was officially confirmed by both companies earlier this month, signaling a strategic alignment between two of Silicon Valley’s largest firms.

Looking Ahead to WWDC

If the reports prove accurate, Apple’s upcoming WWDC could mark a pivotal moment for its AI ambitions. A chatbot-style Siri would not only redefine the assistant’s role within the Apple ecosystem but also indicate that the company is ready to compete more directly in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
