Founder of Windrush Room Recognized for Outstanding Volunteer Contributions”

Ipswich “Reflection Room” Founder Honoured for Volunteer Work

The founder of a unique exhibition celebrating the Windrush generation has been commended for his exceptional volunteer contributions.

Max Thomas established the Reflection Room in 2021, converting an empty shopping centre unit in Ipswich into a “living room exhibition” dedicated to preserving the stories and heritage of Caribbean migrants to the UK.

BBC Radio Suffolk Volunteer Award Recognition

On 17 September, Mr Thomas received the BBC Radio Suffolk Make a Difference Volunteer Award during a ceremony at Trinity Park.

Reflecting on his work, Mr Thomas said:
“A lot of the elders are passing away, with such valuable stories, such gems, and if we don’t capture those and archive them, they’ll be lost forever.”

Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Through Everyday Items

The exhibition features household items cherished by Caribbean families in Britain since 1948, including furniture, bedspreads, a dial telephone, and even a metal bathtub. These artifacts offer visitors a tangible connection to the cultural legacy of the Windrush generation.

The Ipswich Windrush Society, which organises an annual Windrush Day event each June, also conducts educational sessions in schools to further raise awareness and appreciation of this heritage.

Plans to Take the Exhibition on Tour

Looking ahead, the Reflection Room has launched a fundraising campaign to purchase and outfit a bus, allowing the exhibition to travel across the country.

“We want to be able to travel all over the country, have an awning, have a staging, bring it to festivals… that’s my next vision,” Mr Thomas explained.
