GM to Phase Out Chevy Bolt EV in 2026, Shift China-Built Buick Production to US Plant

GM to Restructure Vehicle Production, Bringing Manufacturing Back to the US

General Motors (GM) is undertaking a significant restructuring of its global manufacturing footprint, shifting vehicle production away from China and Mexico and relocating key operations to the United States. As part of this move, the automaker will repurpose its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas — a decision that also signals the beginning of the end for the Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Currently, the Bolt EV is the only vehicle produced at the Fairfax facility. Under GM’s new plan, the factory will take on new models while the Bolt is gradually phased out.

Policy Changes Drive Manufacturing Realignment

GM’s production reshuffle reflects a changing economic and political backdrop in the United States. Trade policies introduced during the Trump administration, including tariffs on imported vehicles and components, have increased costs for automakers producing cars in China and Mexico for the US market.

At the same time, the decision to eliminate the federal EV tax credit — which offered up to $7,500 in incentives for qualifying electric vehicles — has altered the cost dynamics of EV production and sales. Together, these factors have made overseas manufacturing less attractive for vehicles destined for American consumers.

Chevy Bolt EV Faces a Shorter Lifespan

Production of the 2027 Chevy Bolt EV, which reached dealerships earlier this month, is expected to conclude in approximately 18 months. Priced at $29,990 including the destination fee, the model remains one of the most affordable electric vehicles currently available in the US market.

Despite its competitive pricing and accessibility, GM has long indicated that the relaunched Bolt would not be a permanent fixture in its lineup.

“When we revealed Bolt in October, we said and it was widely reported that it’d be a limited run model,” a GM spokesperson said in a statement sent to TechCrunch. “We had also previously announced the gas-powered Equinox would be coming to Fairfax in mid 2027 after Bolt production ramps down. Today we’re announcing the next-generation Buick compact SUV will come to Fairfax beginning in 2028.”

Buick and Equinox Models Move to Kansas

GM confirmed to TechCrunch that the next-generation Buick Envision, currently manufactured in China, will be relocated to the Fairfax Assembly Plant beginning in 2028. Additionally, production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox, which is currently built in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, will move to the Kansas facility in mid-2027.

These changes underscore GM’s broader strategy to localise manufacturing for vehicles sold in the US, reducing exposure to tariffs and geopolitical risk.

What Comes Next for GM’s Affordable EV Strategy?

While the Bolt EV’s future appears limited, GM continues to expand its electric vehicle portfolio. The company currently sells other EV models, including the electric Chevrolet Equinox and Chevy Blazer.

There remains uncertainty over whether strong Bolt sales could prompt GM to reconsider its decision. What is clear is that the automaker has committed to future investment at the Fairfax Assembly Plant.

GM has already promised to bring its next generation of affordable EVs to the facility, although no specific timeline has been announced.
