Vimeo Confirms Job Cuts After Acquisition

Vimeo has begun reducing its global workforce, according to reporting by Business Insider, marking a significant development following its acquisition by Italian technology group Bending Spoons. The deal, completed last year, saw Bending Spoons acquire the video-hosting platform in an all-cash transaction valued at $1.38 billion.

While Bending Spoons acknowledged that layoffs are taking place, the company declined to disclose the exact number of employees affected.

Layoffs Said to Impact a Large Share of Staff

Further insight into the scale of the cuts was reported by The Verge, which cited a LinkedIn post from Vimeo’s former Vice President of Global Brand and Creative. In the post, the executive said that he, “along with a large portion of the company,” had been “impacted by layoffs.” The Verge described the reductions as affecting a “large portion” of Vimeo’s overall workforce.

TechCrunch has contacted both Vimeo and Bending Spoons to request additional details, but no further information has been made public so far.

Founded in 2004, Vimeo has spent years attempting to differentiate itself in a video market overwhelmingly led by YouTube. Despite cultivating a strong creative community and positioning itself as a premium platform for professionals, the company has faced ongoing challenges in achieving large-scale growth.

In recent years, Vimeo has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence as a core part of its strategy. In 2023, the company unveiled plans for AI-driven scriptwriting and video-editing capabilities. More recently, in October, Vimeo expanded its offering with a new range of AI-powered creator tools designed to connect filmmakers’ “content directly to AI workflows.”
