Gumloop Secures $50M From Benchmark to Help Employees Build AI Agents

Gumloop Raises $50M to Expand AI Agent Automation in the Workplace

A Startup Focused on Making AI Accessible to Every Employee

When Max Brodeur-Urbas launched Gumloop in mid-2023, the company’s mission was clear: enable non-technical employees to automate routine work using artificial intelligence. At that stage, however, AI agents—software programs designed to independently perform tasks—were still early in development and often unreliable.

As artificial intelligence capabilities have improved, Gumloop’s platform has progressed alongside them. The company says its technology now enables teams at organizations such as Shopify, Ramp, Gusto, Samsara, Instacart, and Opendoor to deploy dependable AI agents capable of managing complex, multi-step workflows—without the need for engineering support.

Building a Culture of Internal Automation

A key feature of the platform is the ability for employees to share the AI agents they create with colleagues. This collaborative approach helps accelerate automation across entire organizations, as staff members adapt and expand upon each other’s workflows.

According to Brodeur-Urbas, this can rapidly change how companies operate.

“They get addicted, they start building more agents, and then all of a sudden, the whole company is AI native,” Brodeur-Urbas told TechCrunch.

The increasing interest in workplace AI has also caught the attention of major investors.

Benchmark Leads Major Funding Round

Venture capital firm Benchmark recently led a $50 million Series B funding round for Gumloop. The investment was spearheaded by Benchmark general partner Everett Randle, who joined the firm last October from Kleiner Perkins.

The round also included participation from Nexus Venture Partners, First Round Capital, Y Combinator, BoxGroup, The Cannon Project, and Shopify.

Although Gumloop had not been actively seeking additional funding, the company decided that now was the right time to accelerate growth. Brodeur-Urbas described the partnership with Benchmark—the venture capital firm behind companies like eBay, Uber, and Dropbox—as a “no-brainer.”

From Lean Startup to Enterprise Growth

Initially, Brodeur-Urbas had planned to create what he described as a “10-person, billion-dollar company.” However, the growing demand from enterprise clients has shifted that strategy.

The company now intends to expand its engineering team and build a dedicated sales organization to support its rapid adoption among large businesses.

A Competitive AI Automation Landscape

Gumloop operates in a rapidly expanding market where many companies are working to transform knowledge workers into AI agent creators. Established automation platforms such as Zapier and n8n are competing for similar use cases, while specialist tools like Dust are focusing specifically on agent-building capabilities.

Even major AI labs are entering the space. For example, Anthropic recently introduced Claude Cowork, a platform designed to help users build autonomous AI agents without writing code.

Despite the competition, Randle believes Gumloop has a significant advantage.

Real-World Adoption Driving Investor Confidence

During his due diligence process, Randle discovered that at least one company had begun using Gumloop organically.

When he asked a chief technology officer how they had selected the platform, the response highlighted its ease of use. The company had given staff access to Gumloop alongside two rival tools.

Six months later, employees were actively using Gumloop every day or every week, while the competing platforms had largely been abandoned, Randle told TechCrunch.

According to Randle, the platform’s simplicity is the main reason for its strong adoption.

“You can go in and start making agents and workflow automations immediately,” he said.

The Advantage of a Model-Agnostic Platform

Another factor attracting customers is Gumloop’s model-agnostic approach. While some AI startups fear that advances in foundational models could replicate their functionality, Randle believes Gumloop’s flexibility will be a long-term advantage.

Because different AI models excel at different tasks, Gumloop allows businesses to choose whichever model works best for a specific workflow.

Cost considerations also play a role.

“Plenty of enterprises have OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic credits. They want to use all of them,” he said.

A Massive Opportunity in Enterprise AI

For investors like Randle, the appeal of Gumloop ultimately comes down to the scale of the market opportunity.

“Enterprise automation is a massive pot of gold,” Randle said. “I think it’s the biggest category in enterprise AI.”

With new funding and growing enterprise demand, Gumloop is positioning itself at the center of the race to bring AI-powered automation into everyday workplace operations.
