Managing Life’s Many ‘Fires’ Without Burning Out!

People often ask me:

‘How do you manage so many different parts of your life at the same time, especially when each one is important and not easy to handle? How do you stay calm and focused without one situation interfering with another?’

For a long time, I didn’t have a clear answer. I would say, ‘I have built some skills along the way.’

But years later, I realized what I was actually doing.

I had learned to mentally ‘park’ different situations together with the emotions they carried. I would place each one in its own space, almost like separate boxes, and choose which one to focus on in that moment.

By doing this, I was able to stay present, focused, and emotionally steady, giving my full attention to what truly needed me at that moment.

Later on, through reading and my constant curiosity to understand human behavior, I came across the term emotional compartmentalization.

And that’s when it clicked.

I had been practicing it for years without even knowing there was a name for it.

What’s important is that this is very different from suppressing emotions.

Compartmentalization means:

You acknowledge how you feel, but you consciously choose to deal with it later.

Suppression, on the other hand, is when you deny or avoid your emotions, especially the uncomfortable ones. And over time, that can lead to stress, anxiety, or even physical symptoms. I often describe it like this: ‘Suppressing emotions is like hiding a ‘Fire’ under a carpet and pretending it’s not there’.

But compartmentalization is something different. I often describe it like this: Compartmentalization is seeing the ‘Fire’, acknowledging it, and making sure it doesn’t spread, and then coming back to deal with it properly when you can give it your full attention.

And that simple shift can change the way we navigate even the most complex moments in life.
