Top 3 Most Searched Jobs (US) No Degree Req. Potential Earnings +$200K

Americans are shifting their career preferences away from roles requiring a bachelor’s degree towards more flexible, college-free professions that offer substantial six-figure incomes. Google Trends data shared with CNBC Make It reveals that searches for “no degree jobs” in the U.S. reached an unprecedented peak this year.

While nearly 75% of jobs in the U.S. that pay more than $35,000 annually typically mandate a college degree, only 38% of Americans possess a bachelor’s degree, as highlighted by Lisa Gevelber, Google’s Chief Marketing Officer for the Americas. Gevelber emphasizes that this earnings gap poses a significant challenge for companies grappling with understaffing and workers grappling with the impacts of inflation.

Google’s research indicates a strong interest among people in jobs offering extensive travel opportunities, flexible work schedules, and a clear path to entrepreneurship. The top three most searched jobs in the U.S. in 2023, based on “how to become…” queries, are real estate agent, notary, and travel agent.

While these roles generally require at least a high school diploma or GED, there are no formal education prerequisites beyond that. Instead, individuals seeking to work as a notary or real estate agent must obtain certification or an official license from the state they operate in, a process that can take anywhere from 1 to 9 months, according to the National Notary Association and Indeed.

Most travel agents typically require a high school diploma along with on-the-job training. Additionally, agents may opt to acquire certifications from various transit associations, such as the Cruise Lines International Association or the International Air Transport Association, allowing them to book travel for clients on airlines and cruise lines.

Job seekers looking for no-degree positions are particularly mindful of compensation. Within Google searches for jobs without a degree, “high paying jobs without a degree” emerged as a top search in 2023. The average salaries for these roles vary, with travel agents earning an average of $39,955, real estate agents bringing in an average of $86,356 per year, and notaries earning an impressive $129,717.

It’s worth noting that the top 10% of real estate agents and notaries can command well over $100,000 and $200,000, respectively. This shift in career preferences suggests a growing inclination toward professions that offer financial success without the traditional requirement of a college degree.
