Christmas Overwhelm and 5 tips to reduce it!

During this beautiful time of the year, what we see mostly out there are the good things; the joy, cheering, festivities, perfect decor, perfect food, etc;

But there is another side that comes along for some more than the others, OVERWHELM which can leave us feeling not so good about ourselves. And if you are going through grief, anxiety this could be even more challenging.

We are already busy, stretched, and maybe dealing with some challenging stuff. So this time, whilst it is the most beautiful, add more to the task list, sometimes to the pressure of doing it all. And, if you are like me, highly sensitive, then overwhelm can really take over!

But, it does not have to be like this. So, what can we do, to celebrate Christmas in a way that feels right for us and truly brings us joy?

  • You can say no politely, you are in control. It is ok to say NO.  If your schedule is full and you have enough, you dont need to say yes to an activity for the sake of it. Ask yourself, do I really want to be there or do this? Does it bring me joy, is it meaningful?
  • It does not have to be perfect. You do not have to host the perfect meal. You do not have to have the perfect dress, shoes, hairstyle. Lets have fun without the need to be perfect! I know it can be easier said than done, as I have to keep practising this!
  • Focus on the true meaning of Christmas. The more we understand what Christmas is really about for us then everything else becomes secondary and the pressure releases.
  • You do not need to overspend and drain yourself financially. Generosity lies in present, attention and connection.
  • Of course, carve out mindful little pauses. I am sharing here 3 minute breathing space that you can practice anytime and hey its only 3 minutes. https://tr.ee/soLSIdrJfr And well if 3 minutes is a lot, 1 minute of slow gentle breathes, for example, breathe in to the count of 4, hold, breathe out to the count of 6.
  • Do something that brings you back to yourself; a walk, dance, a mindful movement practice, journal, be in nature do something creative, or just have a cuppa in stillness doing nothing … you know what works for you.

May the Christmas spirit be with you. May it reminds you of the light within.

I’m Catherine Galea, an Award-Winning Emotional Empowerment Coach and Mindfulness Teacher for Adults and Children. I help ambitious adults, professionals and parents calm busy minds, navigate stress and emotional overwhelm, and develop greater self-awareness and emotional resilience — so they can experience more calm, clarity, connection and enjoyment in their everyday lives. At the heart of my work is the belief that awareness gives us choice. When we become more aware of our thoughts, emotions, patterns and responses, we create the space to respond differently rather than simply living on autopilot. Through mindfulness, emotional regulation and self-compassion, we can make more conscious choices, create meaningful change and build a life that feels more aligned with who we are and what truly matters to us — a life we love. Before moving into coaching and wellbeing, I spent 20 years in the corporate world, including senior leadership and team management roles. I understand the pressures that can come with achievement, responsibility and balancing the many roles we carry in our professional and personal lives. My own life experiences have also deeply influenced my work. As a teenager, I experienced an eating disorder following years of low self-esteem and difficult childhood experiences. My journey towards greater self-awareness, self-acceptance and emotional wellbeing eventually became part of what inspired me to support others. Today, I work with adults through personalised 1:1 mindfulness programmes, emotional empowerment coaching, group programmes and workshops. I also work with organisations, business communities and educational settings, supporting wellbeing, stress management, self-awareness and emotional resilience. As a mother and specialist mindfulness teacher for children, I am equally passionate about supporting children, parents and families. I believe that when adults develop their own capacity for awareness and emotional regulation, this has a powerful ripple effect on the children, relationships and environments around them. My work brings together mindfulness, emotional regulation, EFT, NLP, self-reflection and other practical wellbeing tools. At its core is helping people understand themselves more deeply, reconnect with their own inner resources and recognise their capacity to make choices that support the way they want to live, work and relate to others. I have delivered mindfulness programmes, workshops and talks to adults, children, university students, schools, workplaces and business communities, and have appeared on radio, television and podcasts speaking about mindfulness and emotional wellbeing. I am also the author of "Becoming You – A Self-Guided Journey into Clarity, Awareness and Meaningful Change", a gentle, reflective journey through five pillars designed to support greater self-awareness and intentional change. I also supported my daughter, when she was six years old, in writing and co-authoring "Welcome to Rainbow Zoo – A Place Where Dreams Come True". Published in 2022, the book has since also been translated into Japanese. Through my coaching, teaching and speaking, my intention is to help both big and little minds develop the inner resources to meet life with greater awareness, calm and confidence — and make choices that help them create a life they love. "Calm Your Busy Mind. Love Your Life."
